After your visit to Piano Grande and Castelluccio you do not need to turn around and go back the same way any longer. The road has been repaired after the earthquake of 2016 and it is once again possible to pass through some more of the Sibillini Mountains and return in the direction of Spoleto via the La Marche province of Macerata.

Along the way you’ll pass through Visso a quaint medieval town built around the Nera River. Once parked you’ll pass over the rushing river to visit the historic center. There, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria is what you’ll want to see. My favorite artwork is an enormous fresco of Saint Christopher.
